Greg has said for a long time that Mata-Nui is easy to find but it is hard to know you've found him.
Alright, easy to find would probably mean that you won't have to go on an epic journey to find him. Maybe easier than finding the MoLi, MoT, ToL etc.
I'm really clueless.
Finding a mask is hard and it's easy to know you've found it.
Example of easy to find and hard to know you've found it:
Takua.
I've thought for a long time and I just keep having conclude the question with nothing.

In the core somewhere? How can the mask not know where he is but still send the energy to him and why only in the core?

Err, where was I? Oh yes; considering he is reliant on the Matoran in order to live, perhaps he is reliant on them to support his... being, I suppose? In other words, perhaps he "lives in" them? Or perhaps their "universe"? It certainly seems likely, considering both of them fit that description.

I believe he is one of the beings Gali saw in the Red Star. But that's just my theory. There are countless possibilities. He could even be an island. Or a sentient Kanohi like the Ignika, but obviously more advanced.

How about this- being a Great Spirit is a state of mind, so when he's not a great spirit, he's being a something else. When the Great Spirit was "put to sleep"- the being was locked out of the "Great Spirit" state of mind. The Great Spirit "dying" is a permanent loss of the ability to access this state of mind.
And it doesn't have to be a state of mind of ONE being. It could be a state of mind of a collective of beings.
It could even be a state of mind of the Matoran.

He could be the planet/star. The part of Dark Destiny when the matoran were in Karzahni's realm. The weird matoran spoke of the world that feeds the world (Karda Nui). I got a quote for those who are unsure of what I am talking about or do not care for the books.

Dark Destiny... strange matoran
The flame could be from the red star or from Karda Nui as people say.
Red Star:
Has Flame
Burns the person inside
Does not hurt people on the planet/universe of the matoran (they wear spf 50!)
Karda Nui
Does not burn matoran.
Produces things, I guess... light!
I have made a theory using this information.
Mata Nui is the Planet thing:
Who said Mata Nui was a human like figure. He could be a shapeshifter!
The core could be like Mata Nui's heart that could be in pain.
The core could be a planet's core that may at one point explode.
The Mask of Life would need to be used in the core for the effect to actually help like some medicines.
The toa would be like white blood cells and the Makuta are viruses (antidermis virus ring a bell?)
The red star could be a friend or a tru brother to Mata Nui.
That is my theory.

3) In book ten, it is revealed that there was a great energy storm that turned Karda nui into what it is now. That could be like a heart attack or something.
Anotre clue: If Mata Nui dies, his body would decompose leaving a dead universe.
What was proven wrong was just disproved from being wrong... so it's right.... I .... guess.... ummmm?

But if the energy storm was a sort of heart attack, and it happened the first time when Mata Nui came to life, why would he have a heart attack when he was first created?

And believe me, that's probably a whole lot closer to the truth then you think. For all you know, Mata Nui could be a classified Rahi! Or maybe he's the Heart of the Visorak! And maybe the Visorak were originally his protecters!!!
You see how all theories can fit?
Although... Heart of the Visorak being Mata nui might be an interesting plot twist, yesno?

okay, mabe not, but that theory of him being a star may be true. Or what if Mata Nui was a being like teh morbuzach!? instead of vines though, he spreads vuata maca trees, providing Matoran Energy.

Okay, I may be wrong, I'm admiting it now, but here it goes. Mata Nui could be Mata Nui the island. Think about it, It had two openings where the sun shown through to Metru Nui, which could be eyes/eyeholes on a mask, and you didn't really have to go on an epic journey to find him, (Mata Nui is Bigger than we thought!). He could also be everything which is what Toa_Tom_3 said earlier.
